Los Angeles Chargers History

The Los Angeles Chargers have a storied history in the NFL. The team was established in 1960 as a charter member of the American Football League (AFL) and was known as the Los Angeles Chargers until 1961 when they relocated to San Diego. However, in 2017, the Chargers returned to Los Angeles and became the city’s second NFL team, joining the Los Angeles Rams.

During their early years in the AFL, the Chargers experienced success under the leadership of head coach Sid Gillman. They boasted an impressive offense led by quarterback John Hadl and wide receiver Lance Alworth. In 1963, the Chargers won their first and only AFL championship, defeating the Boston Patriots in the title game.

The Chargers continued to be competitive throughout the 1960s and early 1970s but struggled to replicate their championship success. In 1979, the team reached their first-ever appearance in the NFL playoffs but fell short of the Super Bowl.

In the early 1980s, the Chargers underwent a significant transformation with the arrival of legendary Hall of Fame quarterback Dan Fouts. Under Fouts’ leadership, the Chargers adopted an explosive passing offense, known as “Air Coryell” after head coach Don Coryell. The team featured notable players like Kellen Winslow, Charlie Joiner, and Wes Chandler. During this era, the Chargers became known for their high-scoring games and exciting style of play.

In 1994, the Chargers enjoyed their greatest postseason success. Led by an outstanding defense known as the “Gang Green” and running back Natrone Means, the team won the AFC championship and advanced to Super Bowl XXIX. However, they were defeated by the San Francisco 49ers in the title game.

The 2000s and Beyond

In the subsequent years, the Chargers had their ups and downs, experiencing periods of both success and rebuilding. They had notable players like LaDainian Tomlinson, Antonio Gates, and Philip Rivers, who helped lead the team to multiple playoff appearances. However, they struggled to reach the Super Bowl, often falling short in the postseason.

In recent years, the Chargers have continued to field competitive teams. In 2020, they drafted quarterback Justin Herbert, who had an impressive rookie season, earning the Offensive Rookie of the Year award. The Chargers have been bolstered by a talented roster, including wide receiver Keenan Allen and defensive end Joey Bosa.

Regarding the NFL schedule, the Chargers, like all NFL teams, participate in a 17-game regular season. The schedule typically consists of playing each team in their division twice, rotating matchups against teams from other divisions within their conference, and facing teams from the opposite conference. The schedule is determined through a formula that ensures fairness and parity across the league.

As the Chargers continue to build on their rich history and strive for success, they remain an integral part of Los Angeles’ sports landscape and a beloved team in the NFL.
