Follow Sin City Sniper's Pointers To Bet NASCAR Like A Pro

If you’re unfamiliar with betting on NASCAR races, then you’ve come to the right place for mastering NASCAR betting. More and more sports bettors are familiarizing themselves with NASCAR and it can be a great way to watch the races and make money at the same time. Without further ado, let’s start our engines and check out a typical NASCAR betting menu!
What’s It All About?
I will be the first to confess I didn’t know a damn thing about NASCAR other than they went around in a circle and no one ever turned right. Oh, and forget about the fans. I had this preconceived notion they were all beer-swilling, foul-mouthed, unshaven, hairy rednecks – and don’t get me started on their husbands. I knew nothing about the matter, yet wanted to work on mastering NASCAR betting fast!

Then I had an epiphany, right about the same time I began seeing major offshore bookmakers, like BetUS, offer NASCAR on their betting menus. I had a Sunday afternoon to kill and decided, why not? I took a stab at betting on these races and learned many things I never knew before, like the track is an oval, not a circle, and these drivers are serious athletes. I was already looking up the NASCAR race schedule.
Imagine clutching a steering wheel for the better part of four hours and flexing the entire time to control a 3500-pound metal beast hurtling around a track and coming within inches of 30-something other cars all trying to get to the front? It’s state-of-the-art engineering coupled with a strategic design of knowing when to pit and when to keep movin’ on.
So, after my initial reservations, I put a few bucks on drivers I vaguely knew and some I had never heard of at all and started praying the NASCAR odds I took were gold.
I started to appreciate the nuances of the sport and realized that the camera work in a NASCAR race is superior to just about any other sport. You can see the driver’s POV and even hear him talk while he’s communicating with the crew chief. There’s also a scrolling list on the left of your screen revealing every driver’s position on the track, so you know where your money stands.
I’m down for NASCAR and if you want to know more than I did before you place a bet then put your racing gloves on and let’s git ‘er done.
Moneyline Betting
If you’ve ever bet a moneyline in baseball, or any sport for that matter, then you’re already halfway home. NASCAR bets are all about the moneyline.
However, if a plus sign is in front of a number like +150 then this means the bettor must risk $100 to win $150. A plus sign usually connotes an underdog because you are risking less than you can potentially make.
Head-to-Head Matchups
Sportsbooks offer several ways to bet on NASCAR races and one of the most popular are the head-to-head matchups. This means that the only two drivers you need to concern yourself with are the two matched up. You pick the one that you believe will finish higher when the race is finished. If both drivers crash or cannot finish for whatever reason, the one that stopped racing first is considered the loser. But always check with your sportsbook on their rules before you place a wager.
A head-to-head bet would look something like this:
William Byron -170 vs Martin Truex +150
William Byron is the favorite as indicated by the minus sign and it would cost $170 to win $100 to bet on him to finish higher than Martin Truex. And on the other side, we see Martin Truex is the underdog as indicated by the plus sign, as it would cost $100 to win $150 on him to finish higher than William Byron.

Betting to Win
One of the best parts about betting on NASCAR is that even the favorites usually pull a pretty hefty return because they have to beat 30 or more other drivers in the dash to the checkered flag. Let’s take a look at the recently completed 2023 Goodyear 400 at Darlington Raceway. The odds on the first 10 drivers are below.
Driver to Win Goodyear 400 | Odds |
---|---|
Kyle Larson | +500 |
Denny Hamlin | +650 |
Martin Truex Jr. | +750 |
William Byron | +850 |
Tyler Reddick | +850 |
Kyle Busch | +1000 |
Ross Chastain | +1100 |
Chase Elliott | +1200 |
Joey Logano | +1200 |
Christopher Bell | +1200 |
As you can see, these are all moneyline-based odds, and I only listed the top 10 drivers, the odds for the others were even longer. Kyle Larson was the favorite, therefore a $100 bet on Larson to cross the finish line before any other driver would give you a $500 profit.
However, it was William Byron who seized control late in the race to take the checkered flag and returned a healthy +850 to all of his backers.
What Else Ya Got?
There are also prop bets like over/under on crashes and red flags while also offering odds on the driver to race the fastest lap. There are stages to these races as well where bettors can wager on the stage winner, who may or may not turn out to be the overall winner of the race. Many online sportsbooks will let you bet on which car manufacturer will win the race as well.
In closing, NASCAR is a hoot once you give it a chance. And while it’s important to give yourself the best shot at winning by researching the drivers and their histories at the track where the race will be run, it’s even more important to only do business at the most trusted and respected sportsbooks with a proven track record of customer satisfaction.
Because what good is winning if you don’t get paid?
