Nick Diaz Will Return to the UFC to Fight Vincente Luque in Abu Dhabi

UFC Legend Nick Diaz Is Set to Fight Power Puncher Vicente Luque in Abu Dhabi

The Eldest Diaz Brother Returns – Concerning? 🥊

Nick Diaz UFC news announcing his return to the octagon is nothing new… the eldest Diaz brother seemingly doesn’t know how to hang the gloves up.

Diaz’s octagon appearances have been rare and completely random since losing an undisputed title opportunity against George St-Pierre in 2013. He fought Anderson Silva in 2015 and, most recently, returned to compete against Robbie Lawler at UFC 266.

However, aged 40 and following a brutal battering at the hands of Lawler, what can Nick bring to the cage following another hiatus and an even older body to contend with?

Luque Will Murder Diaz

In the promotion’s return to Abu Dhabi on August 3, 2024, Dana White announced yesterday that the No.14-ranked Vincente Luque would be Nick Diaz’s return fight.

I was shocked at this matchmaking and, at first, believed it was nothing more than UFC rumors. While it certainly proves Diaz fears no man, it’s a strange fight to make because Luque is significantly closer to his prime than Lawler was, and we all saw how Lawler made Diaz look ready for retirement last time out.

We cannot hide from the facts; Diaz hasn’t won a professional MMA bout in over a decade. Now, he’s facing a vicious finisher in Luque, who, despite losing 3 of his previous 4 UFC bouts, remains a bona fide killer when the octagon door closes. Additionally, Luque has amassed a 15-6 promotional record while Diaz has been inactive.

Daniel Cormier worries

We’re not alone in the worrisome matchmaking of Luque vs. Diaz. Former two-division UFC champion Daniel Cormier shared his thoughts on ESPN’s MMA YouTube channel:

“After watching Nick Diaz compete the last time, I was like, ‘Okay, he’s done.’ Now, the matchup is a little problematic for me because Robbie Lawler seems to be at the same stage in his career as him. Vincente Luque is not there. This is a much more dangerous fight for Nick Diaz.”

Historically, the Ultimate Fighting Championship has done an excellent job protecting fighters from the inevitable. Still, regardless of how you view Diaz vs. Luque, you can’t help but think it will likely end in a sad outcome for one of Stockton’s finest.

Hopefully, the referee will be on his A-game in Abu Dhabi because of all the UFC fights scheduled for this event; we do not doubt that Diaz holds the highest probability of being put to sleep inside the first.
