The Pistons Should Give Up Already

The Pistons Are On the Verge of Making NBA History, But Not the Kind You Should Be Proud Of

Shameful…

In the NBA’s gallery of not-so-greats, the Detroit Pistons losing streak is painting quite a picture.. Their 119-111 home loss to the Utah Jazz on Thursday has extended their losing streak to an astonishing 25 games, teetering on the edge of matching the 2013-14 Philadelphia 76ers’ infamous single-season record of 26.

And if that wasn’t enough, Philly also holds the record for the longest overall losing streak at 28 games, spanning from the 2014-15 to 2015-16 seasons. With the way things are going, the Pistons seem almost set to surpass this record too.

False Hope

Thursday’s game did offer a faint ray of hope, with the Pistons surprisingly favored in the NBA betting odds against a Utah team missing key NBA players like Lauri Markkanen and Jordan Clarkson. But, as if cursed, they turned a potential victory into yet another loss. Winning seems to be the Pistons’ Achilles heel.

Utah’s Kelly Olynyk dominated with 27 points, but Pistons star guard Cade Cunningham led all scorers with 28 points to go along with 10 assists. Jaden Ivey contributed 24 points and Marvin Bagley III added 22. However, good individual performances and a Pistons’ win continue to be mutually exclusive. This Detroit Pistons roster is limited, to put it mildly.

The social media waves were unforgiving, with the “sell the team” chants growing louder. The team’s performance has become fodder for memes and jokes. The arrival of Monty Williams as head coach had initially sparked some optimism, but the team’s trajectory has quickly dampened those hopes.

The game’s first quarter was a precursor of the disaster that unfolded, with the Pistons turning over the ball seven times. Their bench, which was expected to reinforce the team, ended up contributing to their downfall. Isaiah Livers and Alec Burks, the Pistons’ supposed sharpshooters, have been off the mark, going a combined 1-of-27 from the 3-point line in their last five NBA games.

What Is Monty Williams Doing?

Williams’ coaching strategy and his mysterious rotation choices have been puzzling to fans and NBA news outlets alike. His continued deployment of all-bench units has baffled many, seeming less about winning and more about sending cryptic signals to the front office or wanting to get fired.

The Pistons’ fourth-quarter performance was all too familiar – poor shooting from the 3-point line (1-of-10 in the fourth quarter), compounded by turnovers. Overall, their 3-point shooting was a mere 29 percent for the game.

After 25 consecutive losses, Pistons fans have moved past surprise and settled into a state of resigned amusement. The Pistons (2-26) now face the Brooklyn Nets (13-14) on Saturday, and if past performances are any indicator, hopes are not high. The whispers of Monty Williams potentially being fired are getting louder in daily NBA rumors.

The Pistons have turned basketball into a tragicomedy, inadvertently redefining the game with each loss. They’ve become a spectacle of sorts. In the realm of consistent underachievement, the Detroit Pistons’ losing streak is almost impressive.

As they face each game, the challenge for them is to minimize ridicule and perhaps, just maybe, clinch a win. Their high turnover rate, including 37 turnovers in the last two games, is ridiculous. Improving in that area would be a good first step if they want to get back on track! Detroit’s journey continues, one game at a time, in their quest to maybe, just maybe, find the light at the end of this very long, dark tunnel.
