Spezia Stats History

Spezia Calcio was founded in 1906 by a Swiss banker named Hermann Hurni. In 1926, Spezia reached the second tier of Italian soccer for the first time. They won the Prima Divisione title in 1929 but remained in the second tier because of divisional realignment.

During the 1930s, Spezia primarily played in Serie B and their greatest success came during WWII. In 1944, the Italian soccer structure was split into regions. Spezia advanced past Bologna in the Emilia Romagna final, even though Spezia are based in Liguria.

The finals were contested by Spezia, Venezia and Torino in Milan in a round-robin format. Spezia drew with Venezia 1-1 in their first match and managed an incredible 2-1 win over Bologna. So, the Aquilotti won their first and only major title, which was declared honorary by the Italian soccer federation in 2002.

The fact that they’re the only team permanently allowed to exhibit a tricolor badge on their uniform is one of the more incredible Spezia stats. The badge, called the Scudetto, is typically reserved for the winners of the Serie A title each year.

After their peak, Spezia bounced around divisions and even fell into the amateur leagues in 1953. They didn’t return to Serie B until the mid 2000s and the catalyst was an agreement with Inter Milan in 2002 to become Inter’s feeder club. So after 55 years away, Spezia finally returned to the second tier in 2006.

In 2008, the club declared bankruptcy and reformed in the fifth tier of Italian soccer. With three promotions in four years, Spezia rapidly returned to Serie B in 2012. Upon their return to Serie B, the Aquilotti did quite well. One of the more impressive Spezia stats is the fact that they made the promotion playoffs five times in seven years.

In 2019-20, on their sixth try in the playoffs, Spezia earned promotion to Serie A for the first time ever. Defying their Serie A odds, Spezia survived the drop in each of their first two seasons in the top tier.

Betting advice suggests that Spezia could have a rough time in Serie A in the 2022-23 season. In January 2022, they were banned from making transfers for two years due to illegally signing underage players.
