Qarabag FK Stats & History
Qarabag FK were originally called Mehsul and played in Aghdam, Azerbaijan. Mehsul played in the 1966 Azerbaijani championship, while still part of the USSR, and managed to come out in fourth place. Their best result was a second-place finish in 1969, but the club folded soon after.
In 1977, the club was revived and renamed Shafaq. In the 80s, they changed their name to the current Qarabag FK. The first trophy in the Qarabag team stats came in 1988 when they won the local Azerbaijani championship. They also gained a spot in the Soviet Second League as a result.
Amid the 1993 Nagorno-Karabakh war, the club was forced to move from Aghdam to Baku. Former player and head coach Allahverdi Bagirov died in the war. Regardless, Qarabag managed to win their first Azerbaijan Top League title in 1993 as well as the Azerbaijan Cup. Qarabag became the first team from Azerbaijan to win away from home in a UEFA competition in 1999.
Amid financial worries, Azersun sponsored the team starting in 2001, and Qarabag won their second Azerbaijan Cup in 2006. Manager Gurban Gurbanov took over Qarabag in 2008, and he’s currently the most successful coach in Azerbaijan history. Under his tutelage, they’ve added eight Azerbaijan Premier League titles to the Qarabag FK team stats. In 2014, with a 1-0 win over Dnipro, Qarabag became the first Azerbaijani team to win a Europa League group stage match. Qarabag also became the first team to qualify for the UEFA Champions League group stage, in 2017-18.

In their Champions League debut, Qarabag were placed in a difficult group with Chelsea, Atletico Madrid, and Roma. They managed to pick up two draws vs. Atletico Madrid, but lost their other four matches. Qarabag qualified for the Europa League group stage in each of the following three seasons. They advanced to the UEFA Europa Conference League knockout stage in 2021-22, and won their ninth Azerbaijan Premier League title in 2022.
In the 2022-23 season, Qarabag will compete in the UEFA Europa League. The Europa League odds will more often than not price them as underdogs in a group with Olympiacos, FC Nantes and SC Freiburg. However, betting advice often picks Qarabag to win the Azerbaijan Premier League title, as they’ve done it eight times in the last nine seasons.
