Students in Bruges came together in 1890 to create Brugsche Football Club, and the official founding date is often given as 1891. In 1914, Club Brugge reached the Belgian Cup final for the first time, but lost to Union Saint-Gilloise. The first trophy in the Club Brugge stats is the 1920 Belgian First Division title.
Club Brugge were relegated from the First Division for the first time in 1928. They bounced around divisions a bit, following their relegation. Club Brugge spent a solid chunk of time in the 1940s and 1950s in the second tier. However, they returned to the top division in 1959, where they’ve remained ever since.
They ended their 48-year trophy drought in 1968 with a Belgian Cup win. Club Brugge had one of their most dominant periods in the 1970s. They added four league titles to the Brugge stats, and won the Belgian Cup in both 1970 and 1977.

Under manager Ernst Happel, Club Brugge made their first-ever European Final. In the 1976 home-and-away UEFA Cup final, Club Brugge narrowly lost 4-3 to Liverpool on aggregate.
