KRC Genk Stats & History

KFC Winterslag and K Waterschei SV Thor Genk merged to form KRC Genk in 1988. Neither of Genk’s predecessor clubs won the Belgian league, but Waterschei managed to reach the semifinals of the 1982-83 European Cup Winners’ Cup. Waterschei won the Belgian Cup on two occasions.

In Genk’s first season, in 1988-89, they finished last in the Belgian First Division and were relegated. In the second division, Genk won the final round and went right back up to the top flight. The first major trophy in the KRC Genk stats was a 1998 Belgian Cup win. With the win, they qualified for the Cup Winners’ Cup for the first time.

Genk’s first Belgian league win came one season later and they made Champions League qualifiers for the first time. However, Maribor eliminated Genk in the second qualifying round. They made it three consecutive seasons with a trophy and a 2000 Belgian Cup triumph.

The second Belgian league trophy in the KRC Genk stats came in 2002. By later defeating Sparta Prague in the third qualifying round, Genk participated in the Champions League group stage for the first time. With four draws and two losses, they were eliminated in the 2002-03 group stage. Still, they managed to take points from the likes of Real Madrid and Roma.

Their next trophy was a Belgian Cup win in 2009, but they failed to make the Europa League group stage. Genk won the Belgian First Division in 2011 and finished at the top of their Europa League group in 2012-13 and 2013-14. On both occasions, they were eliminated in the round of 32.

In the 2016-17 campaign, Genk defied the Europa League odds and finished on top of their group once again. This time, they made it to the quarterfinals, which remains their best performance in the competition. Genk won the Belgian Pro League once again in 2019, and their most recent trophy was the 2021 Belgian Cup.

Betting advice for the 2022-23 season suggests monitoring the transfer status of Paul Onuachu. The Genk striker scored 19 league goals last season and has been linked with a move away. Genk finished eighth in the 2021-22 season and missed out on UEFA competitions entirely for 2022-23.
