R. Union Saint-Gilloise Stats & History

Belgian club Royale Union Saint-Gilloise is over 120 years old and is from the Brussels area. The club was founded in 1897, and USG first played in the first division of Belgian soccer in 1901. The first Belgian championship in the Royale Union Saint-Gilloise team stats was in 1904. They ended up winning four of the next five titles to close out the first decade of the century.

USG completed their first domestic double in 1913 by winning both the Belgian First Division and the Belgian Cup. By the time the league stopped playing due to WWI in 1915, Union Saint-Gilloise had won seven Belgian championships and two Belgian Cups. One of USG’s best periods was in the mid-1930s. They won three consecutive titles, for the second time, in 1933, 1934 and 1935.

Union Saint-Gilloise got a lot of recognition during that time for going 60 matches unbeaten in the league. No other club in the Belgian top flight has managed to beat the record in the Union Saint-Gilloise team stats yet. USG played their first officially sanctioned UEFA competition in 1958. They managed to reach the semifinals of the Inter-Cities Fairs Cup by defeating Leipzig and Roma.

In 1963, USG were relegated to the second tier and didn’t return to the Belgian Pro League until the 2020s. The catalyst for their return was Brighton & Hove Albion F.C. owner Tony Bloom’s purchase of the club. In 2021, Union Saint-Gilloise won the Belgian Challenger Pro League title to return to the top flight. Incredibly, in their first top-flight season in 48 years, Union Saint-Gilloise were the regular season champions of the Belgian Pro League.

Forward Deniz Undav led the league with 25 goals as USG did the unthinkable. However, they were not crowned champions of the Belgian Pro League in 2021-22. That’s because Club Brugge emerged victorious in the four-team, double round-robin championship stage. Still, USG qualified for the Europa League group stage for the first time in their history. With USG out of European competition for so long, there could potentially be some inefficiencies to exploit in their 2022-23 Europa League odds. Betting advice in the Belgian Pro League recommends being cautious, as Club Brugge have won three consecutive titles.
