Chelsea FC Stats & History
Chelsea FC were founded in 1905 and have played at Stamford Bridge in West London ever since. In just their second season, Chelsea won promotion to the First Division, but bounced between divisions in their early years.Â
The Blues made their first major final in 1915, losing to Sheffield United in the FA Cup final. One of the more interesting early Chelsea FC stats is that they led England in attendance in six seasons before 1920.Â
Under manager Ted Drake, Chelsea won their first league title in 1955. Drake was dismissed in 1961, and the Blues managed their first League Cup triumph in 1965. Five years later, Chelsea won the FA Cup for the first time, and won the UEFA Cup Winners’ Cup the following season.Â
Around the mid 70’s, Chelsea declined and dropped down to the second tier. In the 1982-83 season, the Blues were close to getting relegated to the Third Division for the first time ever. The next season, though, they won the Second Division title.
Chelsea FC Team Records
Chelsea were one of the original Premier League teams and have been in the league since its inception in 1992. With the appointment of player-manager Ruud Gullit in 1996, Chelsea won their first FA Cup title for nearly three decades.Â
Under Gianluca Vialli, the Blues won the League Cup, UEFA Cup Winners’ Cup, UEFA Super Cup all in 1998. In 2000, Chelsea won their third FA Cup. A financial crisis followed and Russian billionaire Roman Abramovich bought the team in 2003.Â
Abramovich invested huge sums of money into the team and hired Champions League winning FC Porto manager Jose Mourinho. Mourinho guided the team to back-to-back titles for the first time in club history and won an FA Cup and two League Cups. At that time, Frank Lampard and Didier Drogba were leaders in Chelsea team stats like goals and assists.Â
In 2009-10 Carlo Ancelotti led Chelsea to their first League and FA Cup double. Two years later, under interim manager Roberto DiMatteo, Chelsea won their first ever Champions League title.
In the 2010’s, Chelsea went on to win two more league titles and FA Cups, two Europa League trophies, and a League Cup. Under Thomas Tuchel, Chelsea won the Champions League in 2021, along with the FIFA Club World Cup.
Only Manchester United and Manchester City have more Premier League titles than Chelsea in the 21st century.
