Norwich City Stats & History

Norwich City were formed in 1902 and immediately joined the Norfolk and Suffolk League. In 1907, their green and yellow strip was born, and they were nicknamed the Canaries. Norwich joined the Football League in 1920 and started out in the newly formed Third Division.

They were first promoted to the Second Division in 1934 and moved to their current home Carrow Road. Norwich finished at the bottom of the Football League in 1956-57, but made the semifinal of the FA Cup just two years later.

The Canaries were back in the Second Division in 1960, and Ron Ashman led them to their first major trophy in 1962. Norwich defeated Rochdale 4-0 and went on to win the League Cup, but they’d have to wait ten more years to make England’s top tier.

In their first spell in the top flight, Norwich made the 1973 League Cup final, but were relegated in 1974. Norwich returned to the top flight soon after, and spent the vast majority of the next 20 years in the First Division. One of the more impressive Norwich City stats is the fact that they’re just one of twelve clubs to win multiple League Cups.

Norwich City FC Team Records

In 1985, Norwich City defeated Sunderland 1-0 in the League Cup final for their most recent major trophy. Unfortunately, they became the first English club to win a major trophy and suffer relegation in the same season.

They immediately bounced back to the First Division, though, starting a nine-year spell in the top flight. Norwich were founding members of the Premier League, and were even surprise title contenders in 1992-92, but nevertheless finished third. One of the most surprising Norwich team stats comes from their first and only UEFA Cup appearance. In 1993, they became the first British team to defeat Bayern Munich at the Olympiastadion but lost in the third round to Inter Milan.

In recent years, Norwich City have frequently bounced around divisions. In their last four Premier League seasons, the Canaries have been relegated. Most recently, Norwich finished last in the 2021-22 Premier League.

In their last two seasons in the Premier League, Norwich City finished last and won only five matches in each. That has made Norwich City’s EPL Odds unpopular for betting. For a 2022-23 future, the best betting advice for Norwich City would be to bet on them at +150 to be promoted back into the EPL.
