HJK Helsinki Stats & History
Fredrik Wathen founded Helsingin Jalkapalloklubi, or HJK Helsinki, in 1907. The club quickly adopted blue and white colors in 1909 as a symbol of Finnish nationalism. They won the first Finnish championship in the HJK Helsinki stats in 1911. The 1910s were a great period for HJK Helsinki, as they won five Finnish titles.
In 1930, Finland finally introduced a league format in soccer, but HJK were unable to qualify for the first season. They did win league titles in 1936 and 1938, though. Over 20 HJK members across a handful of sports died fighting in WWII. It was difficult to recover from those losses, and the club declined as a result.
In 1963, HJK played their last season in the Finnish second division and have remained in the top flight ever since. They won their tenth Finnish title in the HJK Helsinki stats in 1964 upon returning to the Veikkausliiga. HJK played in the European Cup for the first time ever in 1965 but lost 9-2 to Manchester United, on aggregate. One year later, HJK won their first-ever Finnish Cup trophy.

HJK Helsinki Team Records
In 1978, soccer became the only sport played by HJK. They previously had handball, ice hockey, figure skating, bandy, and tennis teams. With soccer the focus, HJK won Veikkausliiga titles in 1978, 1981, 1985, 1987, 1988, 1990 and 1992. Their 1997 title resulted in the pinnacle of the club. In 1998, HJK Helsinki became the first Finnish Club to qualify for the Champions League group stage by defeating FC Yerevan and FC Metz. They managed to defeat Benfica and pick up two draws in their group, but finished in last place.
HJK have been highly successful in the 21st century. Since 2000, they’ve won 12 league championships and eight Finnish Cups. They managed to qualify for the Europa League group stage for the first time in 2014-15, and finished in third place in their group. With preliminary round wins over both Maribor and Silkeborg, HJK Helsinki also qualified for the 2022-23 UEL group stage. The Europa League odds price them as heavy underdogs to win their group, AS Roma and Real Betis are also in it. Betting advice notes that they’ve won a home match in each of their three previous European group stage appearances.
