AC Ajaccio Stats & History
AC Ajaccio was founded in 1910. Ajaccio was the first side to be champions of Corsica, in 1920. They added seven more Corsican titles to the AC Ajaccio team stats in 1921, 1934, 1939, 1948, 1950, 1955, and 1964. Their biggest rivals are fellow Corsican team SC Bastia; on a side note, derby matches turned particularly violent in the 1930s.
Ajaccio turned professional in 1965 and started in the French second division. The Corsicans managed to stay in the league in their first season and registered a historic promotion to the top flight in 1967. Ajaccio was the first Corsican club to play in France’s first division They moved to their current stadium, the Stade François Coty, in 1968.
In 1970-71, Ajaccio managed an impressive seventh place finish in the top flight, just missing out on a European place. In 1973, the first relegation in the Ajaccio team stats was recorded. Then, in 1975, they filed for bankruptcy and languished in the lower leagues.
Under new management in the 1990s, Ajaccio started its climb back to France’s top divisions and to up its Ligue 1 standings. They won the seventh-tier title in 1993, followed by a regional championship in 1994. Two years later, Ajaccio managed to win the National 3 division and scored two more promotions in successive seasons to reach Ligue 2.Â

Coach Rolland Courbis led Ajaccio back into the top flight for the first time in nearly 30 years, in 2002. Ajaccio managed to survive two seasons in Ligue 1 before going down after their third. Their 14th place finishes in Ligue 1 in 2004-05 and remains their best of the 21st century.
