AJ Auxerre Stats & History
The abbot Ernest Abbe Deschamps founded Association de la Jeunesse Auxerroise in 1905. Auxerre started playing in the Catholic league F.G.S.P.F. and reached the final in 1908. They won the Burgundy section of the F.G.S.P.F. each year between 1906 and 1914.
During WWI, Auxerre lost many of its members in combat but continued playing afterward. In 1918 they were one of 48 teams to take part in the first-ever French Cup. Abbe Deschamps passed away in 1949 and Auxerre’s stadium was named after him in 1950.
The club struggled throughout the 1950s and 60s, shuffling through a bunch of managers. In 1970, AJ Auxerre won the Division d’Honneur, moving up to the third tier of French soccer. Auxerre secured promotion to the Second Division in 1974, and reached the Coupe de France round of 16 in 1975-76.
AJA steadily improved and managed the first Coupe de France Final appearance in the AJ Auxerre stats in 1979. They lost to FC Nantes 4-1 but won the Second Division championship in 1980 to move up to the top flight. During the 1983-84 season, Auxerre briefly led the league and finished in third place.

The first European campaign in the AJ Auxerre team stats was in the UEFA Cup in 1984-85. They narrowly fell to Sporting CP in the first round and qualified again the next season. In 1989-90, they made the quarterfinals of the UEFA Cup for the first time.
After a long wait, Auxerre finally won their first major trophy in 1994, the Coupe de France. In 1996, Auxerre completed a historic domestic double, winning both Ligue 1 and the Coupe de France. They also won the Coupe de France championships in 2003 and 2005. This is how you up your Ligue 1 standings, to be sure.
In 2012, Auxerre were relegated from Ligue 1 for the first time in club history. In their first few years in Ligue 2, they were a mid-table team and didn’t look close to earning promotion. After a 15th place finish in 2018-19, Auxerre finished 11th and then sixth in 2020-21. Auxerre managed third place in 2021-22 and defeated Saint-Etienne in the promotion playoff to return to Ligue 1 for the first time in 10 years.
The Ligue 1 odds will take into account their excellent road performances from last season. They lost just two of their 19 away games in Ligue 2 and betting advice suggests monitoring their performances in the 2022-23 season. Either way, it’s always of advantage to check Ligue 1 standings and give the Ligue 1 schedule a once-over to make a betting decision.
