AS Monaco Stats & History
AS Monaco was founded in 1919 and absorbed other local sports clubs. They spent their early years in the regional divisions in France soccer, despite Monaco being its own sovereign state. Monaco were first invited to turn professional in 1933, and played in the French second division.
Their first season in professional soccer was a failure, as they were immediately relegated to the amateur leagues. In 1948, Monaco returned to the second division, and one of the more notable AS Monaco stats came in 1953. That year, they managed to earn a promotion to Ligue 1 for the first time in their history.
Monaco kicked off the 1960s with their first-ever Coupe de France win, as they defeated Saint-Etienne 4-2 in extra time. They managed to win their first Ligue 1 title in the following season. Another of the most important AS Monaco stats is their league and Coupe de France double in 1963.
After legendary manager Lucien Leduc departed, Monaco alternated between the first and second French divisions. Leduc returned for a second spell as manager in 1976 and led Monaco to promotion. Then, he guided Monaco to a third league championship in 1978.
The 1980s were one of the better decades in Monaco’s history. After Leduc departed for good, Monaco won the Coupe de France in both 1980 and 1985. They also managed to win league titles in 1982 and 1988, but couldn’t translate their domestic success to European competition.

Arsene Wenger, who was relatively unknown at the time, was hired as manager in 1987. In Wenger’s first season, Monaco won another Ligue 1 trophy. Monaco also won the Coupe de France in 1991. They fared better in European competitions under Wenger, but weren’t able to bring home a winners’ medal.
In the late 1990s and early 2000s, Monaco won two league titles and regularly qualified for the Champions League. Their best performance was as finalists in 2003-04. In 2011, Monaco were relegated to Ligue 2, but returned to the top flight in 2013.
In their first five seasons back, they qualified for the UEFA Champions League. Against the Ligue 1 odds, Monaco won a shock league title over Paris Saint-Germain in 2017. A mass exodus of the club’s best players followed and they were nearly relegated in 2019. Betting advice implies Monaco are dark horse candidates to win Ligue 1 in 2022-23, at +2000 odds. They’ve finished in third place in each of the last two seasons.
