Clermont Foot Stats & History
Stade Clermontois and AS Montferrandaise merged in 1984 to create Clermont Football Club. In the early days of Stade Clermontois, who were founded in 1911, they languished in the lower leagues. One of the notable achievements in the Clermont Foot stats from the first half of the 1900s is a 1946 semifinal appearance in the Coupe de France.
At the end of the 1946-47 season, Clermontois relinquished their professional status, and wouldn’t regain it until 1966. They won a regional championship in 1971, but stayed in the lower leagues in the 70s and 80s. This remained true even after Stade Clermontois pooled resources with AS Montferrandaise.
After filing for bankruptcy in 1990, the club was resurrected as Clermont Foot 63. Starting in the sixth division, Clermont managed to earn promotions in both 1993 and 1994.
One of the great moments in the Clermont Foot stats came when they were in the fourth tier. In 1996, they made a run to the round of 16 of the Coupe de France and faced off against Paris Saint-Germain. Down 4-1 in the second half, Clermont mounted an incredible comeback to send the tie into penalties. Clermont were victorious in penalties, but lost to OGC Nice in the quarterfinals.

Clermont kept climbing up the French soccer ladder and won the fourth division title in 1999. Three years later, they finally managed to reach the second division. In 2004-05, they did well in both domestic cup competitions. Clermont managed to reach the quarterfinals of both the Coupe de France and Coupe de la Ligue. Unfortunately, they were relegated to the third tier in 2006.
Their stay didn’t last long, as they set records for points, wins, and goals scored in the third division in 2006-07. In 2014, Clermont became the first men’s professional team in France to appoint a woman as their head coach. Clermont reached Ligue 1 for the first time in 2021, and barely avoided the drop.
