Lyon Team Stats & History

Olympique Lyonnais stems from the multisports club Lyon Olympique Universitaire, which itself was originally formed in 1896. OL broke away from Lyon Olympique Universitaire in 1950, and won the second division in just their second season.

Apart from a single relegation, Lyon played the rest of the 1950s in the top flight of French soccer. Lyon won their first major trophy under Lucien Jasseron in 1964 when they took home the Coupe de France. Jasseron was dismissed in 1966, but his replacement, Louis Hon, found immediate success.

The Lyon team stats list a second Coupe de France title win in 1967. Some of the most legendary players in club history played for Lyon during the 60s and 70s. That includes all-time top scorer Fleury di Nallo, playmaker Serge Chiesa, and striker Bernard Lacombe. Lyon also won their third Coupe de France title in 1973.

Towards the end of the 1970s, the club got into deep financial trouble and had to sell their best players. This process culminated in relegation in 1983. Jean-Michel Aulas bought the club in 1987, and had ambitions of turning them into a European contender. First, Lyon returned to the first division in 1989. Then, they qualified for the 1991-92 UEFA Cup.

In the mid and late 90s, Lyon became a contender. They finished second in Ligue 1 in 1995, and reached their first Coupe de la Ligue final in 1996. Finally, Lyon broke a 28-year domestic trophy drought by winning the 2001 Coupe de la Ligue.

Olympique Lyonnais Team Records

The best period in the Olympique Lyonnais stats came directly after their triumph. Lyon won their first ever Ligue 1 title in 2002, and started to break records. They became the best team in France, with an unprecedented seven consecutive league titles from 2002 to 2008. They won their first league and Coupe de France double in 2008, but Bordeaux broke their Ligue 1 title streak in 2009.

Lyon managed to reach the semifinals of both the 2010 and 2020 UEFA Champions Leagues. Lyon’s last trophy was a 2012 Coupe de France victory. Their 24-year European qualification streak was broken in 2020, as they finished in seventh place. Lyon finished in a disappointing eighth place in 2021-22, their worst finish since 1996-97.

The Ligue 1 odds price OL at +1400 odds to win the league in 2022-23, the third-best odds of any team. However, Lyon have sold some of their best players in recent transfer windows. Betting advice does suggest Lyon could perform well in the league, since they’re not playing in European competition in 2022-23.
