Paris Saint Germain Stats & History
Unlike most other teams in Ligue 1, PSG was founded relatively recently. In 1970, local businessmen merged Paris FC with Stade Saint-Germain to create Paris Saint-Germain. In their inaugural season, PSG won the Division 2 title, and were immediately promoted to the top tier.
In 1972, Paris FC broke away from the club amid financial difficulties. Paris FC remained in the top tier, but PSG were administratively relegated to the third tier. Within two years, PSG returned to the top flight and have been the most successful club in France since. Meanwhile, Paris FC have played in relative obscurity.
The first major moment in the Paris Saint Germain stats is their triumph over Saint-Etienne in the 1982 Coupe de France final. Les Parisiens made the quarterfinals of the Cup Winners’ Cup and once again won the Coupe de France in 1983.
Their first league trophy came in 1986, as they topped the table from the start of the campaign to the end. While PSG narrowly avoided relegation a couple of seasons later, the 90s were their first “golden age.” Paris Saint-Germain won another league title in 1994, the Coupe de France in 1993, 1995, and 1998, plus the Coupe de la Ligue in 1995 and 1998.

PSG also won their first European trophy in 1996, as they defeated Rapid Wien in the Cup Winners’ Cup. Despite winning a few trophies in the 2000s, PSG frequently struggled in the league. A major turning point in the Paris Saint Germain stats is Qatar Sports Investments’ takeover of the club in 2011.
Les Parisiens had their best decade in the 2010s with star players like Edinson Cavani, Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Thaigo Silva. In 2013, they won their first league title in 19 years. PSG went on to win six of the next seven Ligue 1 crowns and found success in other domestic competitions. PSG are now the most successful team in French history. They’ve won the most or joint-most Ligue 1, Coupe de France, Coupe de la Ligue, and Trophee des Champions titles.
PSG made their first Champions League final in 2020 but fell to Bayern Munich. In the Summer of 2021, Lionel Messi joined the club adding to a formidable attack with Neymar and Kylian Mbappe. Paris Saint-Germain won the 2021-22 Ligue 1 title, but replaced manager Mauricio Pochettino with Christophe Galtier soon afterward.
The Ligue 1 odds list PSG as the favorite to win the title in 2022-23, at -1000. Betting advice suggests looking at PSG at home. They didn’t lose a single Ligue 1 match at the Parc des Princes last season.
