Stade Brestois 29 Stats & History

A merger of five local soccer clubs founded Brest in 1950. The 29 in the name Stade Brestois 29 doesn’t come from the year the club was founded. Instead, it’s the number the French government assigned to the Finistere department in Western Brittany, where Brest is located.

Brest started in the regional leagues and earned a promotion in their first season of existence. They reached the French Amateur Championship in 1958, but it took them a while to join the professional ranks. Brest earned their first promotion to the second division in 1970.

A historic moment in the Brest team stats is their first promotion to the first division, in 1979. They finished in last place and were relegated but returned a couple of seasons later. In 1987, Brest finished eighth in Division 1, which is still unmatched to this day.

Unfortunately, the club was administratively relegated in 1991 and filed for bankruptcy soon after. Brest toiled in the lower leagues for more than a decade. In 2004, though, a young Franck Ribery led Brest back to Ligue 2. With a second-place finish in Ligue 2 in 2009-10, Brest returned to Ligue 1 for the first time in nearly 20 years.

Les Pirates managed to stay in Ligue 1 for three seasons before going back down again. Brest looked like they’d go down to the third tier for the first half of the 2013-14 season. However, a resurgent squad managed to finish seventh in Ligue 2 that season. In 2016, Denis Le Saint took over as president and made his intentions clear to return to Ligue 1 as quickly as possible.

His wish came true as a +29 goal difference was registered in the Stade Brestois stats in 2018-19. With that, they managed to finish in second place and return to Ligue 1 for the first time in six years. In their first season back, Brest finished in a respectable 14th place.

They had a relegation scare in 2020-21 as they finished just one place above the drop. Despite not picking up a win in their first 11 matches of the 2021-22 season, Brest went on an impressive six-game winning streak. They managed an 11th-place finish, since Franck Honorat led the team with 11 goals.

Brest sits at +100000 Ligue 1 odds for the 2022-23 season, which is understandable given their track record. Betting advice often acknowledges that Brest are an inconsistent and often unpredictable team.
