Stade Rennais Stats & History

A group of former students founded Stade Rennais Football Club in 1901. Quickly, Rennes became one of the best teams in Brittany and often won the regional title. In 1922, Rennes managed to make the Coupe de France final for the first time. However, they fell 2-0 to Red Star.

Rennes were one of the first teams in France to become professional and played in the inaugural first division season in 1932-33. The rest of the 30s were full of disappointment for Rennes. They returned to the Coupe de France final in 1935 but fell 3-0 to Marseille. Two years later, they were relegated to the second division for the first time.

They returned after WWII and recorded their first top-four finish in the Rennes team stats in 1949. One of Rennes’ best-ever seasons was in 1964-65. SRFC finished fourth again in the league and won their first Coupe de France trophy over Sedan. Six years later, former Lyon striker Andre Guy scored the winning penalty vs his former club in the Coupe de France final.

After their second Coupe de France triumph, Rennes suffered a decades-long decline. They couldn’t get past the first round of the Cup Winners’ Cup in 1972 and were back in Division 2 by 1975. The club dealt with financial difficulties over the next couple of decades. During that time, Rennes frequently earned promotion to Ligue 1, and were promptly relegated back to the second tier.

Stade Rennais Team Records

The most recent promotion in the Stade Rennais stats came in 1994. They’ve remained in Ligue 1 ever since. In 1998-99, their first season with new owner Francois Pinault, Rennes finished in fifth place. With lots of money being poured into the club, Rennes also finished fourth in 2005 and 2007. They were joint-winners of the UEFA Intertoto Cup in 2008 and reached the Coupe de France final again in 2009.

In the mid-2010s Rennes made two more domestic cup finals but lost them both. However, they finished the decade with a stunning Coupe de France win over PSG. Rennes trailed 2-0, but brought the fixture back and won in penalties. Common betting advice suggests Rennes are a perennial European contender as they’ve played in UEFA competitions for five years in a row. An interesting dark horse, with interesting Ligue 1 standings,  Rennes are priced at +2500 Ligue 1 odds to win the title in 2022-23.
