Toulouse FC Stats & History
Toulouse lost their top-flight team in 1967 as the first Toulouse FC merged with Red Star Paris. Union Sportive Toulouse was created in 1970 as Toulouse’s new team. Toulouse began playing in the second division of French soccer and was frequently near the top of the table.
Chairman Lilian Buzzichelli set the goal of moving up to Ligue 1 and overhauled personnel in pursuit of it. Buzzichelli then left the club in 1977 and 10 players followed him out of the exit door. In 1979, the club adopted the Toulouse FC name once again. In their purple and white kits, they registered their first promotion to Division 1 in the Toulouse team stats in 1982, increasing their Ligue 1 standings afterwards.
Toulouse proved they belonged in the top flight with an 11th place finish in their first season. The first European qualification in the Toulouse FC team stats was in 1985-86. By finishing in fourth place, Toulouse played in the UEFA Cup for the first time. In the first round, they defeated Diego Maradona and Napoli on penalties. TFC fell in the next round to Spartak Moscow.
In 1986-87, Toulouse improved further in the league, finishing in third place. At the end of the 80s, some of TFC’s best players left the club due to financial worries. Relying on academy products over the next few seasons, Toulouse went down to Ligue 2 in 1994.

They bounced around leagues for the next few seasons and slipped down to the third tier in 2001. With successive promotions, TFC managed to reach Ligue 1 once again. In 2006-07, they matched their best-ever finish of third place. With that, they qualified for the third round of Champions League qualification but fell to Liverpool.
Andre-Pierre Gignac won Ligue 1’s golden boot in 2008-09 with 24 goals. He helped Toulouse to a fourth-place finish and another UEFA Cup berth. TFC had a relegation scare in 2015-16 and it came down to the final day. They trailed Angers SCO 2-1 with minutes to play and miraculously scored two late goals to salvage their place in Ligue 1. In 2020, Toulouse was relegated to Ligue 2 for the first time since 2001.
TFC finished in third place in 2020-21 and won Ligue 2 in 2021-22. Toulouse’s pre-season Ligue 1 odds priced them at just +250 to be relegated. Betting advice suggests tempering expectations though as they won just three games in their most recent Ligue 1 season, thus elevating yet again their Ligue 1 standings; be sure to give the Ligue 1 schedule a once-over to make a good betting decision.
