FC Koln Stats & History
A merger of two predecessor teams, Spielvereinigung 1907 Köln-Sülz and Kölner BC, was formed in 1948. Both were successful teams in their own right so Koln were set up for success from the get-go. They began playing in the top-tier Oberliga West in 1949-50 and won their first divisional championship in 1954.
That year, FC Koln also reached the DFB-Pokal final but lost to Stuttgart. In 1960, they won the Oberliga once again and made the German championship final, where they lost to Hamburg. One of the best seasons in the Koln team stats was in 1961-1962 when they won the German championship.
With the triumph, the Billy Goats qualified for their first European Cup. In 1963, FC Koln became one of the original 16 Bundesliga teams. One of the most notable FC Koln team stats is that they were the first Bundesliga champions. In 1968, they also recorded their first DFB-Pokal title.
They continued to be one of the best teams in German soccer in the early 70s but were a bit unlucky. They opened up the decade with three DFB-Pokal losses in four years and finished second in the Bundesliga in 1973. Koln’s fortunes changed later on in the decade as they won the DFB-Pokal in 1977. One year later, FC Koln completed a league and DFB-Pokal double.

FC Koln won the DFB-Pokal again in 1983, which remains their last major title. In 1986 they made the European Cup final for the first time and closed the decade out with a second-place Bundesliga finish. Koln also finished second in 1990 but suffered their first relegation from the Bundesliga in 1998.
With five relegations since the turn of the century, Koln has bounced around the top two tiers of German soccer. In 2016-17, Koln qualified for the European competition for the first time since 1997.
