FC Schalke 04 Stats & History

A group of high school students founded Westfalia Schalke in 1904. Their nickname, Die Knappen, comes from the coal miners that played for the team in the early days. They changed their name to the current FC Schalke 04 in 1924 and started wearing a blue and white kit. That’s where their second nickname, Die Königsblauen, or the Royal Blues, comes from.

In 1927, they won their local league championship and first won the West German championship in 1929. Schalke steadily rose in profile in the 1930s. They made the semifinals of the German championship in 1932 and the final in 1933. Finally in 1934, they won their first national title in the FC Schalke 04 stats.

Incredibly, from 1933 to 1945 Schalke didn’t lose a single home match in the Gauliga. From 1935 to 1939 they were undefeated in the league in a period of unprecedented dominance. They also defended their German championship title in 1934 and would win it three more times in the 30s. Schalke 04 also won their first Tschammerpokal, now called the DFB-Pokal, in 1937.

They also found success in the early 1940s, with German Championship wins in 1940 and 1942. Post-WWII Schalke, and German football in general, went through a period of decline. The most recent German championship, now Bundesliga, title in the FC Schalke 04 stats was in 1958.

FC Schalke 04 Team Records

Schalke 04 became one of the original Bundesliga clubs in 1963. In 1971-72, they finished second to Bayern Munich and won the DFB-Pokal. Some of Schalke’s players were banned for life in the 1971 Bundesliga match fixing scandal. That includes all-time leading scorer Klaus Fischer, who has the third-most Bundesliga goals in history.

In the 80s, Schalke were relegated and promoted a couple of times and it was their worst decade to date. They rebounded in the 90s with a UEFA Cup win in 1997 and established themselves as one of the better Bundesliga teams.

Schalke further improved in the 2000s with two DFB-Pokal wins and a pair of UEFA Intertoto Cup titles. They’ve never won the modern Bundesliga but finished in second in 2000-01, 2004-05 and 2006-07. Under Ralf Rangnick, Schalke made the semifinals of the 2011 UEFA Champions League and won the DFB-Pokal the same year.

Die Knappen had a brutal season in 2020-21 and were relegated after finishing in last place. However, they earned promotion back to the Bundesliga on their first attempt. Their Bundesliga odds in 2022-23 price them at +175 to go back down to the 2. Bundesliga. Betting advice often mentions striker Simon Terodde as he scored over a goal per 90 minutes last season.
