FC Union Berlin Stats & History
Union Berlin’s predecessor club, FC Olympia Oberschöneweide, was founded in 1906. They later took on the name SC Union 06 Oberschöneweide. Union was one of the better clubs in Germany in the 1910s and 1920s. They often won local titles and competed on the national stage. In 1923, they made the German championship final but lost 3-0 to Hamburg.
Since their inception, Union Berlin has been a working-class team. They were often nicknamed “Schlosserjungs”, which means ironworking boys. In the 30s, the German leagues were reorganized into regional leagues. Union didn’t have much success during this time and suffered a few relegations.
After WWII, Union Berlin played in the city league. In 1950, they finished in second place in Berlin but were unable to get authorization to travel for the national finals. Most of the players and coaches defected to the West side of Berlin after this and created the club Sport-Club Union 06 Berlin.
Union changed their name to the current 1. FC Union Berlin in 1966. One of the more notable achievements in the Union Berlin stats is their 1968 East German Cup win over FC Carl Zeiss Jena. They also reached the final in 1986 but fell to 1. FC Lokomotive Leipzig 5-1.

After German Reunification in 1990, Union Berlin started in the third tier NOFV-Oberliga Mitte. They won the league three times in a row but were denied entry into the 2. Bundesliga due to financial problems. In 2000-01 they won the 3. Liga and were finalists in the DFB-Pokal for the first time. As a result, they qualified for the UEFA Cup.
So, Union Berlin first played in the 2. Bundesliga in 2001-02. Union spent the better part of two decades shuffling between the second and third divisions. They finally achieved their first promotion to the Bundesliga in 2019. FC Union Berlin stats show that they’re the first team from the former East Berlin to play in the top tier.
In their first Bundesliga season, Union finished in 11th place. They have enjoyed a rapid rise to the top half of the table. In 2020-21 they finished seventh and qualified for the UEFA Conference League. Against the Bundesliga odds, they finished fifth in 2021-22, qualifying for the Europa League.
Betting advice suggests losing 2021-22 top scorer Taiwo Awoniyi to Nottingham Forest could hurt them. They’re one of the least likely teams to win the Bundesliga this season, at +50000 odds.
