VfL Bochum 1848 Stats & History
Allegedly, VfL Bochum are one of the oldest sports clubs in the world. They claim to be founded in 1849 as a gymnastics club. The soccer section of the club, Turnverein zu Bochum, was then added in 1911. Nazi leadership forced Bochum to merge with Turn- und SportVerein Bochum 1908 and Sportverein Germania Vorwärts Bochum, forming VfL Bochum in 1938.
Upon merging, Bochum played in the Gauliga Westfaeln, the top-tier league for the region. Due to wartime difficulties, VfL Bochum made a temporary merger as Kriegsspielgemeinschaft VfL 1848/Preußen Bochum. The best result in the Bochum team stats from that time was a second-place finish in 1938-39.
After WWII, Bochum was once again an independent team. They played in the second division to start out and often bounced around the top two tiers. When the Bundesliga was formed in 1963, Bochum dropped down to the third division. In 1965 they won the Regionalliga West, earning them a promotion to the second tier once again.

VfL Bochum 1848 Team Records
Three years later, Bochum made their first-ever DFB-Pokal final. There, they lost 4-1 to FC Koln. The first Bundesliga appearance in the VfL Bochum team stats was in 1971 and they made the most of their opportunities. Despite not being one of the most talented sides, they managed to stay in the top flight for 20 years. During that run, Bochum reached the 1988 DFB-Pokal final and narrowly lost to Eintracht Frankfurt.
Since 1993, Bochum have bounced around the top two tiers a lot. They’ve been relegated from the Bundesliga six times but they’ve had some solid seasons during that span. They qualified for the UEFA Cup in both 1997-98 and 2004-05 on the back of fifth-place Bundesliga finishes.
Most recently, VfL Bochum won promotion after winning the 2. Bundesliga in 2020-21. They often were an upset pick in 2021-22, beating the Bundesliga odds on multiple occasions. Bochum managed to beat both Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund in their first season back. Betting advice often mentions their upset potential but they are -200 favorites to be relegated in 2022-23.
