VfL Wolfsburg Stats & History
Wolfsburg, as a Volkswagen manufacturing city, had their first soccer team affiliated with the auto manufacturer. They were first called BSG Volkswagenwerk Stadt des KdF-Wagen. Post-WWII a new club was formed and it was called VSK Wolfsburg. The green jerseys worn by VSK are still in use today.
A rift in the club caused many of the players to leave. The club rebuilt from the ashes in December 1945 and took on the current name, VfL Wolfsburg. In the early years, the Wolfsburg stats show a number of amateur division titles. In 1954, Wolfsburg finally reached the top tier Oberliga Nord. Their first spell in the top flight lasted five years before relegation.
When the first season of the Bundesliga was played in 1963, Wolfsburg were in the second division. Early on, Die Wolfe came closest to reaching the Bundesliga in 1970, when they made the promotion playoffs. For nearly 20 years, starting in the mid 70s, Wolfsburg were a third division team.
Wolfsburg made their first DFB-Pokal final appearance in 1995 but fell 3-0 to Borussia Monchengladbach. In 1997 Wolfsburg finished second in the 2. Bundesliga. For their efforts, they earned their first-ever promotion to the Bundesliga. In the 1998-99 season, Wolfsburg finished in fifth place and qualified for their first UEFA Cup.

They also managed to play in the UEFA Intertoto Cup in 2000, 2001, 2003, 2004 and 2005. In 2003, Wolfsburg made it to the final of the competition but lost to Perugia. Against the Bundesliga odds, Wolfsburg won a shock title in 2008-09. It remains the most significant achievement in the VfL Wolfsburg stats. During that season, Grafite and Edin Dzeko scored an impressive 28 and 26 Bundesliga goals, respectively.
In 2009-10 Wolfsburg played in the UEFA Champions League for the first time in their history. Finishing in third place in their group, they ended up reaching the quarterfinals of the Europa League. One of Wolfsburg’s best seasons was in 2014-15. That year, they finished in second place in the Bundesliga and won their first-ever DFB-Pokal.
Wolfsburg qualified for the 2021-22 Champions League but finished in last place in their group. It was a difficult season for Die Wolfe as they hovered around the relegation zone and lost star striker Wout Weghorst. Betting advice suggests Wolfsburg could be in line for an improvement.
