AS Roma Stats & History
AS Roma was founded in 1927 when three Roman clubs merged. Notably, the only big Roman club to refuse to merge was Lazio, who are now Roma’s biggest rivals.
In the early years, a high point in AS Roma stats was a second-place finish behind Juventus in 1931. Roma once again came close to their first title in 1936 but finished one point behind winners Bologna.
The Giallorossi won their first Scudetto in 1942, led by striker Amedeo Amadei, who scored 18 goals. After WWII, Roma struggled and were relegated for the first and only time in 1951. Roma immediately returned to Serie A after one season in Serie B.
Roma won their first major international trophy in 1961 when they defeated Birmingham City 4-2 in the final of the Inter-Cities Fairs Cup. Three years later, Roma also won their first ever Coppa Italia title. The Giallorossi went on to win the Coppa Italia again in 1969, but their best decade was in the 1980s.

Under Nils Liedholm, Roma kicked off the 80s with back-to-back Coppa Italia wins. In 1983, they won their first Serie A title for 41 years and added another Coppa Italia one year later. In 1984, they also finished runners-up in Serie A and lost the European Cup final.
Roma managed their fourth Coppa Italia title of the decade in 1986 and they were the most successful in the competition in the 80s. However, the club declined in stature in the 90s. Roma did win the 1991 Coppa Italia.
Club icon Francesco Totti also made his debut in 1992. Totti is the leader in two major AS Roma team stats all-time, goals and appearances. Totti went on to play 25 seasons for Roma, winning the Serie A title in 2001, and the Coppa Italia in 2007 and 2008.
In five consecutive seasons from 2013-14 to 2017-2018, Roma finished in second or third. They also made the Champions League semifinals in 2018. Experienced manager Jose Mourinho was hired in 2021, and he led Roma to the inaugural UEFA Conference League title in 2022.
