Empoli Stats & History
Empoli FC was founded in 1920 by a merger of Football Club Empoli and Unione Sportiva Empoli. With humble beginnings, Empoli started out in the Tuscan third division. They continued to play in the lower leagues until they were promoted to Serie B in 1946.
This lasted for just four seasons, as Empoli suffered relegation to Serie C in 1950. Empoli sold most of their players in 1955 and the most challenging period in club history followed. They were relegated to Serie D in 1956 and were almost relegated to the amateur divisions in 1960.
Empoli sealed their return to Serie C in 1963, with a 2-0 win over Tempio in the playoff final. This time, Empoli stuck around the third tier for 20 years. The 1982-83 season was one of their best, as the Empoli stats show just three losses. With a 15-3-16 record, Empoli won Serie C Girone B and earned promotion to Serie B.
Surprisingly, Empoli held their own in the second tier and managed to finish eighth in their second season back. The 1985-86 season is one of Empoli’s most memorable, as they made the Coppa Italia quarterfinal. Most importantly, they sealed their first-ever promotion to Serie A.

Empoli FC Team Records
Becoming one of the few provincial clubs to ever play in Serie A, Empoli’s first Serie A stay lasted two years. In their Serie A debut, they scored a dream 1-0 win over powerhouses Inter Milan.
From 1989 to 1996, though, Empoli were back in Serie C. Under Luciano Spalletti, Empoli managed two successive promotions and were back in the top flight in 1997. Once again, their stay in Serie A lasted just two years. Ever since, Empoli have bounced around Serie A and Serie B but had a successful period in the mid 2000s. The club won the 2005 Serie B title.
Francesco Tavano emerged as a goalscoring force and his name is at the top of the all-time Empoli stats for goals scored. Tavano scored 19 goals in Serie A in 2005-06, as Empoli managed their then-highest finish of eighth place. They bettered it one season later, finishing seventh. In the wake of the match fixing scandal, Empoli qualified for the UEFA Cup but didn’t play in it.
Empoli won two Serie B titles in the late 2010s and have done well in their rivalry with Fiorentina as of late. Empoli managed to defeat third-place Napoli twice in 2021-22 and have won four of their last seven matches vs Fiorentina as of July 2022. When betting on Serie A odds, understand that Empoli have often played spoiler versus bigger clubs. However betting advice suggests they are massive longshots to win Serie A in 2022-23, at +250000 odds.
