PSV Eindhoven Stats & History
The Philips company founded its soccer team in 1910, called the Philips Elftal. The team quickly fell apart amid strikes and financial troubles, and reformed as Philips Sport Vereniging in 1913. The soccer department switched its name to PSV in 1916, and started playing in the third division.
By 1926, PSV established themselves in the top flight and haven’t been relegated since. They won the Dutch championship for the first time in 1929 and added a second title to the PSV stats in 1935. Post-WWII, PSV signed “the Canon” Coen Dillen, who became one of their best-ever players.
He helped them win their first-ever KNVB Cup in 1950 over HFC Haarlem in extra time. PSV Eindhoven also won the Dutch soccer championship again in 1951. Throughout the rest of the 50s and most of the 60s, PSV struggled to win domestic trophies. In the 1970s, though, they emerged as one of the premier Dutch soccer league teams and regularly played in European competitions.
They added league titles to the PSV Eindhoven stats in 1975, 1976, and 1978. PSV also reached the semifinals of the European Cup Winners’ Cup in both 1970-71 and 1974-75. In 1976, they won the KNVB Cup and qualified for the European Cup semifinals for the first time. PSV’s first taste of continental glory was a UEFA Cup trophy in 1977-78.
