SC Braga Stats & History
A group of students founded SC Braga in 1921. In 1947, SC Braga won their first Portuguese Second Division title to ascend to the top tier. While Braga were not title contenders in the 40s and 50s, they managed a handful of fifth-place finishes.
In 1961, SC Braga suffered their first major setback and got relegated to the Second Division. Three years later, Braga returned to the First National Division by winning another Second Division championship. They won their first Portuguese Cup trophy in the SC Braga stats in 1966, and it was their first major trophy.
Despite their success, SC Braga couldn’t avoid relegation in 1970, and they went back to second tier. After earning a promotion back to the First National Division in 1975, Braga have remained in the top flight ever since. In 1977, they won the first and only edition of the Portuguese Football Federation Cup.
Braga never managed to finish higher than fourth in the Primeira Liga until the 2009-10 season, when they finished second in the Portuguese soccer milieu. Although, they did win the 2008 UEFA Intertoto Cup. Due to their strong 2009-10 season, Braga qualified for the UEFA Champions League for the first time. They knocked out Celtic and Sevilla in the qualifying rounds to advance to the group stage.

With a third-place finish in their group, SC Braga were placed in the Europa League knockout stage. They ended up making a run to the Europa League final but lost 1-0 to fellow Portuguese side FC Porto. Two years later, they added their first Taça da Liga to the SC Braga stats.
The last ten years have been Braga’s best-ever period from a trophy perspective. They won the Taça de Portugal in both 2016 and 2021 and won another Taça da Liga in 2020.
