Red Star Belgrade Stats & History
All of the Serbian sports clubs that existed before WWII were abolished in 1944. Hence, a group of young men from Belgrade created the Serbian soccer club Crvena Zvezda, or Red Star Belgrade, in 1945. In their first-ever season, they won the People’s Republic of Serbia league championship.
Red Star also won three consecutive Yugoslav Cups from 1948 to 1950. They joined the Yugoslav First League and added five championships to the Red Star Belgrade stats in the 1950s. Red Star Belgrade first participated in the European Cup in 1956-57. In their maiden European campaign, they made the semifinals but lost to the Italian side Fiorentina.
In 1957-58, Red Star Belgrade made the quarterfinals but lost to Manchester United. Under Miljan Miljanic, Red Star won the league four times and added three more Yugoslav Cups to their trophy case. They also reached the semifinals of the 1970-71 European Cup.
In 1978-79, Red Star played in their first European final, in the UEFA Cup. After eliminating clubs like Arsenal and Hertha Berlin, Red Star Belgrade fell to Borussia Monchengladbach in the final. With a bunch of solid European campaigns behind them, Red Star set the goal in 1987 of winning the European Cup in the next five years.

The plan seemed to be failing because in two of the next three seasons, Red Star could only qualify for the UEFA Cup. With a Yugoslav First League and Cup win in 1990, Red Star were back in the European Cup in 1990-91. They dominated their first three opponents, beating them by at least three goals on aggregate. In the semifinals, they also took down German giants Bayern Munich. In the final against Marseille, they won on penalties and added their first ever European Cup title to the Crvena Zvezda stats.
Since the dissolution of Yugoslavia, Red Star Belgrade have been the most successful Serbian soccer team. As of 2022, they’ve won the Serbian SuperLiga five consecutive times. Betting advice recommends considering them as a title contender, since they haven’t finished lower than second since the 2008-09 season. They also outperformed their Europa League odds in 2021-22 by finishing at the top of their group.
