Athletic Bilbao Stats & History
In 1898, students in Bilbao founded Athletic Club and they merged with Bilbao Football Club in 1902 as Club Bizcaya. Bizcaya won the first ever Copa Del Rey in 1902 and they were known as Athletic Club starting in 1903. One of the most notable Athletic Bilbao stats is that they won the first three Copa Del Reys. In 1904, their opponents failed to turn up so they were declared winners by default.
The 1910s were another excellent decade for Bilbao as they won five more trophies. They won back-to-back Copa Del Rey’s in 1910 and 1911 and three consecutive ones from 1914 to 1916. Pichichi was regularly on top of the Athletic Bilbao stats during this time and the La Liga top scorer award is named after him. Bilbao’s current home San Mames also opened in 1913.
Bilbao were one of the founding members of La Liga in 1928 and they finished third in the first-ever season. One of the most successful clubs in La Liga history, Athletic Club was the first team to ever win the La Liga/Copa Del Rey double. They did it in back-to-back seasons in 1930 and 1931. In fact, they won four straight Copa Del Reys from 1930 to 1933.
Just before the Spanish Civil War in 1936, Bilbao managed another La Liga win under William Garbutt. Bilbao won another double in 1943, which started a run of three consecutive Copa Del Rey wins. Telmo Zarra, Athletic Club’s all-time leading scorer, was their star player during the 40s and early 50s.

The 50s were another successful decade for Athletic Bilbao as they won four Copa Del Reys and a league title in 1956. While Bilbao were still competitive in the 60s and 70s, they weren’t able to live up to their lofty standards. During those two decades, they were only able to win two Copa Del Rey’s and failed to win a league title.
Under Javier Clemente, a resurgent Athletic Club won two league titles in the 80s, including a double in 1984. Since then, Bilbao have only won three Spanish Supercups. Only Barcelona has won more Copa Del Reys than Bilbao, though.
The 2022-23 La Liga odds price Athletic Club at +15000 to win the title. Betting advice seems to suggest Bilbao are a mid table club, especially since they’ve never been relegated from La Liga. Bilbao’s biggest rivals are fellow Basque club Real Sociedad.
