Real Madrid Stats & History

Real Madrid was founded in 1900 as a breakaway club from La Sociedad. Originally called La Nueva Sociedad, they were renamed Madrid Football Club in 1901. In 1905, Real Madrid won their first-ever Copa Del Rey title over Athletic Bilbao.

In 1920, Madrid Football Club changed their name to Real Madrid as King Alfonso XIII granted the royal title to the club. Real Madrid played in the first season of La Liga but lost the title on the last day in a loss to Bilbao.

A massive moment in the Real Madrid stats, they won their first of their record 35 La Liga titles in 1931-32. Los Blancos retained the trophy in 1933 and went on to win a couple of Copa Del Reys to close out the decade.

After the Civil War, Santiago Bernabeu became the club’s president. He rebuilt Real Madrid and their stadium, which is now named after him. One of the most incredible Real Madrid stats is their five consecutive European Cup wins from 1956 to 1960. During this time, the club became a global force and also won four league titles in the 50s.

The 60s and 70s were also successful for Real Madrid. They won eight of a possible ten La Liga titles in the 60s and won two European Cups and a Copa Del Rey. In the 70s, Madrid added five league titles and three Copa Del Reys to their extensive trophy cabinet.

Real Madrid Team Records

The club struggled a bit, for their lofty standards, in the early 1980s but had a resurgent second half of the decade. They won the UEFA Cup in 1985 and 1986 and closed out the decade with four consecutive La Liga trophies.

After a 32-year drought, Real Madrid won their seventh European cup title in 1998. In the early to mid-2000s, they were famous for their “Galactico” policy of signing a global star each Summer.

Since 2000, Real Madrid have won a further seven Champions League/European Cup trophies and eight La Liga titles. They hold the record with 14 Champions League wins.
