Former members of local Zurich clubs FC Turicum and FC Excelsior founded FC Zurich in 1896. One of the founders was Joan Gamper, who went on to found FC Barcelona. The first championship in the FC Zurich stats was in 1902. It took 22 years for Zurich to win another title, and a difficult period ensued.
FC Zurich bounced around divisions over the next 35 years. They were unable to establish themselves in the top flight for an extended period and had a lengthy trophy drought. Finally, in 1963, Zurich won the Nationalliga A title after 39 years without a trophy. Zurich played in the European Cup for the first time in 1963-64 and found some success. With aggregate victories over Dundalk, Galatasaray and PSV, FC Zurich advanced to the semifinals. There, they lost 8-1 on aggregate to Real Madrid.
The first domestic double win in the FC Zurich stats was in 1966. In the 1967-68 season, FC Zurich reached the quarterfinals of the Inter-Cities Fairs Cup. They also went on to win the 1968 league title. The 1970s ended up being Zurich’s best decade in terms of trophies won. They won three consecutive Swiss titles from 1974 to 1976 and won the Swiss Cup on four occasions. Zurich returned to the European Cup semifinals in 1977 but lost to eventual champions, Liverpool.

After winning the league title in 1981, Zurich went through another period of decline. It culminated in relegation to the second tier in 1988. Back in the top flight in 1990, FC Zurich didn’t manage to win another trophy until the 2000 Swiss Cup. They ended their 25-year Swiss Super League drought in 2006. After winning the Super League in 2009, FC Zurich participated in the group stage of the modern iteration of the European Cup, the UEFA Champions League, for the first time. However, they finished in last place in their group.
Since then, Zurich have qualified for the Europa League group stage on five occasions. They made the knockout rounds for the first time in 2018-19 but lost in the round of 32 to Napoli.
