Trabzonspor Stats & History
A merger of several local Trabzon clubs founded Trabzonspor back in 1967. While not as old as some of Turkey’s other top clubs, Trabzonspor have an extensive trophy case. Ahmet Suat Ozyazici led Trabzonspor to the first division of Turkish soccer in 1973. In their first top flight season, Trabzonspor finished in ninth place.
Just two years later, they won the first Turkish championship in the Trabzonspor stats. They defeated Liverpool 1-0 in the first leg of the second round of the 1976-77 European Cup but lost 3-0 in the return leg. Incredibly, in just their fourth season as a top flight club, Trabzonspor won the domestic double in 1977. To close out the decade, they won another Turkish Cup in 1979 and a league title in 1979.
Trabzonspor started the 80s in style, as they won the 1980 and 1981 Turkish League titles. It was the first and only time they managed three consecutive titles in the Trabzonspor stats. Despite their success in the Turkish League, they failed to progress to the latter stages in European competitions during this era. However, Trabzonspor managed to win both the Turkish League and Turkish Cup again in 1984.
After their triumphs and Ozyazici’s departure in 1984, Trabzonspor suffered an eight-year trophy drought. Finally, they won the Turkish Cup again in 1992 and 1995. Another eight-year drought followed before they won the Turkish Cup again in 2003. Trabzonspor remained competitive in the Turkish Super Lig but couldn’t seem to win another title. They finished in second place in 2003-04 and won the Turkish Cup once again.

Following another Turkish Cup win in 2010, Trabzonspor had their longest trophy drought in club history. They broke the ten-year drought with a Turkish Cup win in 2020. Finally, Trabzonspor ended their 38-year spell without a Turkish League title, in 2022. They finished eight points ahead of second place Fenerbahce and made the Champions League playoff round. With an aggregate loss versus FC Copenhagen, Trabzonspor qualified for the 2022-23 Europa League group stage. For those wanting to bet on Trabzonspor’s 2022-23 Europa League odds, note that they’ve qualified for the knockout stage in two of their three previous appearances. Most betting advice discounts Trabzonspor’s chances to win the Super Lig for a second straight year.
