Shakhtar won four Ukrainian Premier League titles as well as four Ukrainian Cups in the 2000s. Their 2009 UEFA Cup run remains a point of pride. On their way to the final, they knocked out giants like Tottenham Hotspur, CSKA Moscow, Marseille and rivals Dynamo Kiev. In the final, they defeated Werder Bremen 2-1 to seal their first and only European trophy.
Still, Shakhtar have had some success in Europe in the meantime. In the 2010-11 season, they won their Champions League group over Arsenal and made the quarterfinals. Shakhtar Donetsk dominated the Ukrainian Premier League in the 2010s as well, with eight of ten possible trophies.
The Ukrainian Premier League resumes in August 2022 after going on hiatus since February due to the war. Shakhtar are usually at the front of the pack, and haven’t finished lower than second since the 1995-96 season. Betting advice suggests being cautious taking Shakhtar’s Champions League odds. They’ve advanced from the group stage on just four of 16 attempts.
