Austin FC Stats & History
For a while, Austin, Texas was the biggest metropolitan area in the USA without a major pro sports team. When the Columbus Crew ownership group announced their intentions to move to Austin in 2019, the first seed was planted. The city council approved a lease on a stadium and a name and logo were released in the Summer of 2018.
In October 2018, an ownership group linked to the Cleveland Browns stated their intentions to keep the Crew in Ohio. They were successful, however, the MLS still granted Austin the right to operate an expansion franchise starting in 2021. The construction of a soccer-specific stadium started soon after.
Josh Wolff was announced as the first head coach in the Austin FC team stats, later on in 2019. Former U.S. men’s national team player Claudio Reyna was announced as the team’s sporting director in November of that same year.
Former NYCFC midfielder and Finnish international Alexander Ring became the club’s first captain. Despite the pieces put in place, the 2021 season was not a regular one. It started about a month and a half late due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Also, the U.S. Open Cup was canceled, so Austin would only be playing in MLS matches.
