Charlotte FC Stats & History
Before being awarded an MLS franchise, Charlotte had a relatively rich soccer history. The city was home to the Carolina Lightnin’, who won the 1981 American Soccer League Championship. They’ve also been home to the Charlotte Eagles and Charlotte Independence.
Charlotte was also on the shortlist of cities MLS was originally planning on playing in, in 1994. However, their bid to land a franchise was unsuccessful, as well as subsequent bids in 1996 and 1998.
When the Charlotte Independence was created, they had eyes toward renovating their stadium and winning an expansion franchise. Those dreams fell short, as did a separate proposal in 2017.
Finally, in 2019, Carolina Panthers owner David Tepper’s proposal was accepted by MLS. Thus, Charlotte FC was born. Slated to begin to play in 2021, the timeline was pushed back by a year due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Charlotte FC Team Records
An MLS attendance record of 74,479 was recorded in the Charlotte FC team stats in their first-ever home game. However, they lost the match 1-0 to L.A. Galaxy. Charlotte FC got their first win in March 2022, a 3-1 triumph over Supporters’ Shield Holders NE Revolution.
Former head coach Miguel Angel Ramirez was fired just three months into the season and was replaced by interim Christian Lattanzio. In his first match as coach, Charlotte defeated the Red Bulls. Midway through the season, Charlotte were within reach of an MLS playoff spot. Another milestone in the Charlotte team stats was defeating Chelsea on penalties in a July 2022 friendly.
The MLS odds now imply Charlotte is a playoff contender. Betting advice implies there may be solid opportunities to bet on them in their debut season. With a limited history and constant changes, researching their lineups and injuries could be key.
