A group led by Beckham started negotiating a stadium deal with the Miami City council in 2013. Then, Beckham exercised his option in 2014 but it wasn’t approved until a stadium deal could be reached.
In 2018, Beckham’s proposal was approved and MLS awarded Miami an MLS franchise. Inter Miami CF were slated to start playing in 2020. Miami played all of two games before the season was postponed by the COVID-19 virus. Their first home match wasn’t until August and they defeated Orlando City 3-2.
Inter Miami struggled to score goals in their debut season. Lewis Morgan led the Inter Miami CF team stats with just five goals. They finished in tenth place in the Eastern Conference and qualified for the Playoffs Play-In Round. There, they lost 3-0 to Nashville SC.

In 2021, Miami was fined for breaking salary cap rules. Still, they had former international stars like Blaise Matuidi and Gonzalo Higuain on the roster.
