Philadelphia Union Stats & History
Philadelphia was not one of the first ten MLS markets that received a team in 1996. Since that time, there were visible efforts to bring a franchise to the city. Finally, in 2008, MLS announced that Philadelphia would be the 16th team in the league. They played their inaugural season in 2010.Â
The Union missed out on the playoffs in their first season but had an impressive 2011 campaign. They finished third in the Eastern Conference behind 11 goals from Sébastien Le Toux and made the playoffs for the first time. However, the Union lost to the Houston Dynamo over two legs in the Conference semifinals.
Philly missed out on the playoffs in each of the next four seasons. They did, however, add two U.S. Open Cup final appearances to the Philadelphia Union team stats. In 2014, they took the Seattle Sounders to extra time but fell by a 3-1 scoreline.Â
One season later, they played in another U.S. Open Cup final that went into extra time, this time vs. Sporting KC. In a heated match, where ten yellow cards were shown, Philadelphia lost in penalty kicks. The second playoff appearance in the Philly Union team stats came in 2016 but they were knocked out in the first round.Â

Philadelphia Union Team Records
In 2018, the Union made the U.S. Open Cup Final for the third time in club history. The third time wasn’t the charm for them, though, as Houston Dynamo thrashed them, 3-0. The period from 2019 to 2021 was the most consistent stretch in club history. They didn’t finish lower than third in the Eastern Conference in any of those seasons.
Finally, in 2020, Philadelphia Union won their first-ever trophy. By finishing with the best record in MLS, Philadelphia was awarded the Supporters’ Shield. They also made the semifinals of the MLS is Back tournament but lost in the first round of the regular season playoffs. The 2021 season was another excellent one for the Union. They made their first appearance in the CONCACAF Champions League in club history and reached the semifinals. The Union also made the Eastern Conference final for the first time but lost 2-1 to eventual champions NYCFC.Â
Betting advice in 2022 has identified the Union as one of the best picks in the first half of the season. They equaled the biggest margin of victory in MLS history by defeating D.C. United 7-0 on July 8th. As the number one team in the Eastern Conference through 22 games, MLS odds priced them at +700 to win the title.Â
