Seattle Sounders FC Stats & History
Seattle was discussed as an ideal location for an MLS team from the get-go. However, multiple factors delayed the dream from becoming a reality. The lack of an adequate grass field and season ticket assurances caused them not to receive one of the original 10 franchises. Finally, in 2007 MLS announced that an expansion team would be coming to Seattle.
So, the Seattle Sounders played their inaugural MLS season in 2009 and were successful from the start. They were the first expansion team to win their first three matches and just the second to win the U.S. Open Cup. The Sounders were also just the third expansion team to make the playoffs in their first MLS season.
They first participated in CONCACAF Competition in 2010 and won back-to-back U.S. Open Cups. They added a third U.S. Open Cup title to the Seattle Sounders team stats in 2011. That season, they also finished with the league’s second-best record, but still couldn’t advance past the Conference Semifinals. In 2012, Seattle set a couple of milestones. They won a playoff series for the first time, defeating Real Salt Lake 1-0 on aggregate in the Conference Semifinals. Also, the Sounders made the semifinals of the CONCACAF Champions League for the first time.
The 2014 season is the best regular season performance in the Sounders team stats. They won the MLS Supporters’ Shield by finishing with the league’s best record and reaching the 20-win threshold for the first time. While they were eliminated from the playoffs in the Conference Final, they managed to win a fourth U.S. Open Cup.

Seattle started the 2016 season in a calamitous fashion. They were in danger of missing the playoffs for the first time with a 6-12-2 record. Then, assistant coach Brian Schmetzer took over and Seattle signed Uruguayan Nicolas Lodeiro. They closed the season with just two losses in their last 14 matches and went on an incredible run in the playoffs. In their first MLS Cup final appearance, they defeated Toronto FC in penalties.
In the five seasons since Seattle has finished second in the West in each one. They won the MLS Cup once again in 2019 and were runners-up in both 2017 and 2020. One of their biggest achievements is becoming just the second American club to win the CONCACAF Champions League, in early 2022.
The midseason 2022 MLS odds priced them at +2500 to win the MLS Cup. Betting advice has often mentioned their frustrating inconsistency in the 2022 season, which is unlike the Sounders of years past.
