Sun Persevering Without Jones

The Connecticut Sun opened the season’s second half losing to lowly Phoenix before rebounding emphatically with back-to-back wins over red-hot Atlanta. DeWanna Bonner and Alyssa Thomas obviously remain the driving forces in Connecticut’s 17-6 start, though we’d be remiss if we didn’t mention Brionna Jones. Jones, a two-time All-Star and 2022 Sixth Player of the Year, was off to a terrific start before rupturing her right Achilles tendon in late June.

Bonner recently passed Candace Parker for eighth on the WNBA’s all-time scoring list, while Thomas became the first player in franchise history to surpass 1,000 career assists. The Sun teammates also recently announced their engagement.

Thomas, who is averaging 14.8 points, 9.6 rebounds, 8.0 assists and an WNBA-best 1.9 steals, already has three triple-doubles this season and a record seven for her career. She recently became the fastest player in league history to collect 3,000 points, 1,800 rebounds, 1,000 assists and 400 steals, needing only 261 games to hit those totals per WNBA stats.

Guard Natisha Hiedeman has also stepped up of late, shooting a combined 11-of-18 from 3-point range against the Dream. In doing so, Hiedeman became the first Sun player to hit at least five treys in back-to-back games. Keep that in mind when assessing the Sun vs Wings betting odds.

Despite Jones’ absence, the Sun remain the biggest title contender outside of the WNBA’s two “Super Teams.” Connecticut is +2500 to win its first championship, the third-best WNBA odds behind the Las Vegas Aces (-350) and New York Liberty (+275).

Wings on the Rise

Don’t look now, but the Dallas Wings have won five straight games and are building their case as a legitimate contender. This is shaping up to be a big week for Dallas, with games against Connecticut, Washington and Dallas. But the Wings, who own the Western Conference’s second-best record at 13-9, have shown a propensity for leveling up to the competition. Their 98-88 road victory over the Liberty last Wednesday was an eye-opener. They committed only two turnovers in handing New York just its fifth loss.

Big picture, the Wings are still something of a longshot in the WNBA standings. They’re currently priced +4000 to win the WNBA title, which is ironically down from their preseason tag of +3500. But that may have more to do with the Aces being a giant than anything else. Is anyone capable of beating them multiple times in the playoffs?

Dallas’ trio of Arike Ogunbowale, Satou Sabally and Natasha Howard is one of the best in the WNBA. Ogunbowale is third in the league in scoring (21.9 points per game), while Sabally and Howard are sixth and seventh in rebounding, respectively. They have combined for 67% of the Wings’ scoring.

Also, don’t overlook center Teaira McCowan. The former No. 3 overall pick has four double-doubles in her last seven games and is averaging 10.9 points and 8.6 boards on the season.

Handicapping the Game

First-year head coach Latricia Trammel has Dallas playing an outstanding brand of basketball. Ogunbowale and Sabally are both young superstars, and the oft-traded Howard has settled in nicely. The Wings still may be another year from serious title contention — again, is anyone beating Las Vegas? — but regardless, the ceiling on what’s possible continues to rise.

Conversely, the veteran-laden Sun are more a win-now group. That’s why Jones’ season-ending injury was so devastating. The 6-foot-3 Jones, who was averaging 15.9 points, 8.2 rebounds and 1.8 steals, added another dimension to Connecticut’s roster with her size and physicality. The Sun simply don’t have anybody who can replicate that outside of Bonner and Thomas.

This is the second meeting between the teams since Connecticut’s 80-74 win on June 4. The Sun did a terrific job defensively on Ogunbowale, holding her to a season-low eight points on 3-of-16 shooting, including 0-of-5 from beyond the arc. It was the only game this season she’s failed to sink a 3. Safe to say, she should fare much better this time around.

With homecourt on its side, Dallas should be slightly favored in the Sun vs Wings betting odds.
