Understanding MLS Team Stats

Teams in USA’s MLS get no points for each loss, one for each tie and three points for each win. A number of MLS stats by team are displayed in match summaries and/or the league table. Those include possession, shots/shots on target, goals/goals for, points, and goal difference.

Goal difference, in particular, can impact the MLS playoff race. If there are two teams are more level at the end of the season, it comes into play as a secondary tiebreaker. Goal difference is calculated by subtracting goals against from goals scored.

Other soccer team stats can be relevant for betting on MLS. An indicator of a team’s defensive quality is how many shutouts or clean sheets they’re able to keep. Home and away records are certainly important as well as keeping track of suspensions due to yellow and red cards.
