Understanding Serie A Games & Fixtures
Serie A is the top professional football league in Italy. It is contested by 20 teams, who each play each other twice, once at home and once away. In the Italian Serie A, teams play a double round-robin schedule with 38 games from August to May.
The Serie A calendar is released in June each year. The schedule for each match is released in the weeks leading up to the game. The Serie A games are usually played on Saturdays and Sundays. However, there are some games that are played on Mondays and Fridays. The kick-off times for Serie A games are usually at 15:00 CET and 20:45 CET.
Selection of Italian Teams
Serie A teams are determined by a random draw. The draw is made in two stages:
- In the first stage, the teams are divided into two groups of 10 teams. The teams in each group play each other twice, once at home and once away. The top four teams from each group then progress to the second stage of the draw.
- In the second stage, the teams are drawn against each other in a single-elimination tournament.
- The winner of the final match is crowned Serie A champion.
Before Betting on Serie A Fixtures
Soccer league matches can and will end in draws so three-way, instead of two-way, moneylines are offered. The standard betting lines in soccer are therefore like other sports. There are goal lines, which are essentially point spreads and match and team totals.
There are plenty of blockbuster Serie A games and matchups to bet on throughout the season, with clubs like AC Milan, Inter Milan, Juventus, Napoli and Roma.
Prior to betting on Serie A games or matchups, be aware that the away team is listed after the home team in the sportsbook. When looking at factors to make an informed bet, consider how each team has fared home and away, which players are injured or suspended, plus recent results and the matchup history.
The head-to-head record of both teams in a match can be helpful for betting but there are plenty of other factors to consider.
For example, does one Italian team have a better ATS record than the other team? Have either team’s recent matches typically gone over or under the spread, or is there no discernable trend?
A more recent Coppa Italia matchup than a Serie A one could mean that the former could be a way to compare the sides. While head-to-head history can be a critical tool, rosters are ever-changing so it may be worth assigning a limited value to it.
