Understandings the NBA Standings

The NBA standings are an ever-changing fabric of the season. The standings are split by the two conferences: The Eastern Conference and the Western Conference.

The Miami Heat took the top spot in the Eastern Conference last season with a record of 53-29. The Phoenix Suns earned the league’s best overall record and finished atop the Western Conference at 64-18.

For example, going into the 2022-23 season: the Phoenix Suns and Los Angeles Clippers are the favorites to finish the season with the No. 1 seed, illustrated by their win total of 52.5.

The NBA Champion Golden State Warriors are projected at 51.5. The Boston Celtics have the highest win projection at 54.5 with the Milwaukee Bucks close behind with a win total of 52.5

As the season progresses, these become the NBA playoffs standings. Each team’s status for the postseason is marked by a letter to signify its position.

The NBA standings aren’t just a way to track each team’s win-loss record, but also to identify any trends. Teams may be “hot” and on a winning streak, or losing often. These also factor into how an NBA team is offered on the betting lines, including point spreads.

NBA Format

There’s an 82-game regular season, with the top eight teams from each conference qualifying for the playoffs. The 16 teams then play three, best-of-seven series within the conference to get to the NBA Finals.

With the 2020-2021 addition of the play-in tournament, just the top six teams from each conference automatically qualify for the playoffs. Seventh- and eighth-seeded teams now compete in the play-in tournament with the ninth- and 10th-seeded teams to determine the final two participants in each conference.

Prior to the start of the regular NBA season, there’s preseason and even a summer league. These are exhibition games that usually feature rookies and prospects. Wagering is generally available on preseason games, so tune in to see the future stars of the league.
