Rally Dakar New Chrono Stage

🚥 48h Chrono Stage: Engines Fall Silent At The Roar Of The Cannon

Introducing a fresh rally format, the 48H CHRONO STAGE spans two intense days, resembling a challenging marathon stage. While competitors are allowed to assist one another during the night, the traditional choices for meal and repair companions are eliminated. Instead, drivers and crews find themselves dispersed across eight distinct bivouacs.

As the clock strikes 4 pm, all vehicles must come to a halt at the nearest bivouac. Isolated from communication and unaware of their rivals’ performances, participants camp overnight, resuming the journey at 7 am the next day to tackle the remaining route. The reckoning takes place after covering approximately 600 kilometers of a special stage.

🚥 Empty Quarter: A Dual-Day Desert Extravaganza

The expansive Empty Quarter provides the backdrop for the groundbreaking 48H CHRONO STAGE, challenging the time constraints of the initial sequence. The terrain effortlessly accommodates two separate courses—one for motorcycles and quads, and the other for cars and trucks.

Top FIA teams won’t have the luxury of following the paths of their two-wheeled counterparts; they’ll have to rely on skill to navigate the challenging landscape. In a unique twist, the ‘bonuses’ system, originally introduced for motorbike stage openers in the previous edition, will be in play.

Adding to the anticipation, let’s dig into the prospects for the 2024 Rally Dakar with a look at the odds, heightening the thrill of the unfolding events.

🏁 Rally Dakar History

The Dakar Rally, a legendary motorsport adventure, traces its roots back to 1977 when Thierry Sabine found himself lost in the vast expanse of the Libyan desert during the Abidjan-Nice Rally. His daring rescue from the sand dunes fueled a profound fascination with the landscapes, prompting Sabine to pledge to share this captivating experience with the world. Thus, the idea of the Paris-Dakar Rally was born.

Sabine envisioned a challenging odyssey open to all riders, a rally that carried a message of friendship between all men. His visionary spirit and a touch of madness turned this dream into reality, with the inaugural rally embarking on a route from Europe to Algiers, traversing Agadez, and culminating in Dakar. The founder’s motto, “A challenge for those who go. A dream for those who stay behind,” encapsulated the essence of the rally’s spirit.

Fast forward to the present day, the Dakar Rally is gearing up for its 46th edition, set to commence on January 5 in Saudi Arabia. This marks the fifth time the event will unfold in the Arab country, promising a riveting and demanding challenge for participants. The rally will cover a total distance of 7,891 kilometers, featuring twelve special stages and a unique Prologue to kick off the action.

A Unique Marathon Through Saudi Arabia

A notable addition to this year’s rally is the introduction of the “48-hour challenge,” a 584-kilometer timed marathon that adds a distinctive twist. Competitors will commence their journey in the morning, pause in the evening, and resume their march the following day. At 4 pm local time, drivers must halt at the next bivouac they encounter, resuming their journey at 7 am the next morning.

The rally’s starting point in Al-Ula will host the Prologue, a crucial 27-kilometer stretch determining the starting order. The initial special stages will guide drivers through diverse terrains, from Al Henakiyah to Al Duwadimi, posing various challenges along the way. One standout stage is the “48-hour challenge,” promising an unprecedented timed marathon across the vast Empty Quarter. This daunting terrain will host two separate courses for motorbikes/quads and cars/trucks, challenging top FIA teams to navigate based on their talent.

As participants recharge in Riyadh, the second week unfolds with a challenging route to Al Duwadimi, Ha’il, and back to Al-Ula. A loop and a final drive to Yanbu will mark the culmination of this demanding rally, concluding with a 175-kilometer stage and the crowning of the Touareg Trophy winner on January 19.
