Talks of an expansion MLS team in Atlanta began in 2008 but an initial bid was withdrawn. The biggest catalyst in Atlanta United FC becoming a reality was the Atlanta Falcons opening up a new stadium. Mercedes-Benz Stadium was suitable for both soccer and football and Falcons owner Arthur Blank got another bid approved in 2014.
Atlanta United began playing in the MLS in 2017 and their first-ever match was a 2-1 loss to the New York Red Bulls. The Atlanta United team stats show that they were one of three expansion teams to make the playoffs in their first season.
In the 2018 season, under the coach of the year Tata Martino, they finished second in the Eastern Conference. Josef Martinez and Miguel Almiron were standouts and Martinez won the league’s MVP award. Atlanta participated in their first-ever CONCACAF Champions League campaign and won the Campeones Cup over Club America. First-year coach Frank de Boer also guided Atlanta United to their first U.S. Open Cup title. However, they lost in the Eastern Conference final.

The 2020 season was marred heavily by the COVID-19 pandemic and Martinez’s ACL injury. Atlanta United subsequently lost all of their matches at the MLS is Back tournament and Frank de Boer was dismissed. It was the first season in club history they failed to qualify for the playoffs. They did, however, make the CONCACAF Champions League quarterfinal for a second straight year.
Atlanta United had another slow start in 2021. They won just two of their first 13 matches and Gabriel Heinze was fired as head coach. Under Gonzalo Pineda, Atlanta rallied and outperformed their MLS odds to make the playoffs. They were knocked out in the first round, though.
