American Gauff Delights The Home Fans By Winning the 2023 US Open Title
There were four different winners in the Grand Slam women’s singles finals, and that was one of the main storylines when it comes to the 2023 WTA recap.
Iga Swiatek did win the French Open, but she did not have the same level of success in the majors as she had experienced a year earlier.
Swiatek and Aryna Sabalenka are well ahead of their competitors as they are ranked first and second in the WTA rankings. Coco Gauff, Elena Rybakina and Jessica Pegula round out the top 5.
Sabalenka was the only tennis player to reach two Grand Slam women’s singles finals in 2023, as she also reached the US Open final.
The next Grand Slam event is the Australian Open. Swiatek (+275), Sabalenka (+450), Rybakina (+650) and Gauff (+900) lead the way in the Australian Open outrights.
Here’s how things played out in the high-profile events during the 2023 women’s tennis season.
Australian Open
Marketa Vondrousova gave a glimpse of what was to come when she upset No. 2 seed Ons Jabeur in the second round of the Australian Open.
Elena Rybakina stunned Swiatek 6-4, 6-4 in the Round of 16 on her way to the singles final in Melbourne.
American Jessica Pegula lost to Victoria Azarenka in the quarterfinals. Azarenka also beat American Madison Keys earlier in the tournament.
Aryna Sabalenka didn’t lose a set until the singles final but she rebounded to beat Rybakina 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 to win the Australian Open.
Swiatek (+165) was the clear favorite heading into the Australian Open. Sabalenka came in at +1200 in the Australian Open outrights.
French Open
Swiatek returned to her winning ways as she beat Karolina Muchova 6-2, 5-7 6-4 to win back-to-back and record her third French Open singles crown. It was one of the biggest stories when looking at the 2023 WTA recap.
Coco Gauff only American to reach the quarterfinals. Her title bid ended with a 6-4, 6-2 loss to Swiatek.
Muchova beat No. 2 seed Aryna Sabalenka in the semifinals before falling to Swiatek in an entertaining French Open singles final.
Swiatek came into the tournament at -140 in the odds to win the French Open, followed by Sabalenka at +600 according to the tennis odds.
Wimbledon
Unseeded Vondrousova was well back in the Wimbledon outrights when the tournament started. However, there was no stopping her once play started at Wimbledon in one of the more surprising developments in the 2023 WTA recap.
Vondrousova topped Pegula in three sets in the quarterfinals before eliminating unseeded Elina Svitolina in the semifinals.
Each of the top four seeds reached the quarterfinals, but only second-seeded Sabalenka got through to the semifinals.
Regarding the tennis schedule, Vondrousova topped Ons Jabeur 6-4, 6-4 in the singles final.
Americans Pegula and Keys each lost in the quarterfinals.
Swiatek was priced at +140 to win Wimbledon going into the Round of 16. Rybakina (+220), Sabalenka (+400) and Jabeur (+600) were other top challengers.
US Open
Teen Coco Gauff was the toast of New York City as she powered her way to the US Open title.
In the title match, she topped Sabalenka 2-6, 6-3, 6-2.
Gauff needed to win three three-set matches just to get to the second week of the US Open. That included back-to-back wins over veterans Elise Mertens and Caroline Wozniacki.
It was nearly an all-American final as Keys took the first set 6-0 in the semifinal against Sabalenka before dropping tiebreakers in the second and third sets.
Swiatek lost to Jelena Ostapenko in the Round of 16, while Rybakina fell to Sorana Cirstea in the third round.
Swiatek (+200) had the best odds to win the US Open, followed by Sabalenka at +350. Gauff paid off rather well with +500 odds, while Rybakina (+650) and Pegula (+750) were other top contenders.
WTA Finals
Swiatek returned to being a dominant force as she didn’t drop a set against Gauff, Jabeur and Vondrousouva to advance to the semifinals.
Pegula was undefeated in the other group. Pegula topped fellow American Gauff 6-2, 6-1 in one semifinal, with Swiatek topping Sabalenka 6-3, 6-2 in the other semifinal.
The title match was over in a hurry, with Swiatek defeating Pegula 6-1, 6-0. In the tournament, 21 of the 27 tennis matches ended in straight sets.
While Swiatek didn’t win multiple Grand Slams in 2023 after winning three of the four majors in 2022. There are still plenty of highlights for Swiatek to look back on.
“Sometimes I felt like it’s just kind of ridiculous because people got used to me winning,” Swiatek told the media at the WTA Finals. “It’s not like it’s going to happen all the time. So, I think this season was kind of more normal.
“I think the main thing that I want to avoid is forgetting that this was also a good season, and I still won some great tournaments. I won a Grand Slam.”
