Sinner Has More Than a Prayer’s Chance in Rotterdam

Aussie Open Champion Sinner The Favorite in the ABN AMRO Open Odds

Can Auger-Aliassime or Rublev Win a Second Title in Rotterdam?

Fresh off a run to the Australian Open title, Jannik Sinner returns to the court in Rotterdam. He leads the way in the ABN AMRO Open odds.

One of the top challengers will not stand in Sinner’s path as Daniil Medvedev, the event’s defending champion, Sinner withdrew from the ATP 500 event, citing a foot injury.

Part of the draw for the big hitters on the ATP tour could be that Richard Krajicek, the only Dutch men’s player to win a Grand Slam singles title, is the tournament director. He is also a former champion in the event.

Ready For An Encore?

As one of the sport’s rising stars, Sinner would have attracted plenty of attention even before his impressive performance in Melbourne, resulting in his first Grand Slam singles title. Now, all the eyes will be on the recently crowned Australian Open champ. He is the favorite according to the ABN AMRO Open odds.

Sinner topped three top-five players in the quarterfinals, semifinals, and final at the Australian Open, and that included dethroning 10-time Australian Open champion Novak Djokovic in the semis.

His last four losses came to players ranked in the top 20, so Sinner could be around for a while in this tournament.

Medvedev would have been the top seed, but he is still working his way back from a foot injury.

“Unfortunately, I have to pull out of Rotterdam,” Medvedev said in a statement. “After an incredibly tough and long run in Australia, my body is not recovered enough yet to play come and defend my title. I love playing in Rotterdam, have a long history with the event, and look forward to coming back in 2025.”

A Look At the Other Contenders

It is dangerous to discount former champions in any event, so keep an eye on Rublev, the 2021 winner in Rotterdam, as well as Auger-Aliassime, who won the tournament in 2022.

Auger-Aliassime has fallen to No. 28 in the ATP rankings, so he could face a tough draw. That could impact his ABN AMRO Open odds.

Rublev joins Sinner to give the field a pair of top-5 tennis players in the latest ATP rankings.

No. 7 Holger Rune, No. 8 Hubert Hurkacz, No. 11 Grigor Dimitrov, and No. 13 Grigor Dimitrov can’t be overlooked.
Hurkacz is the top seed at the event in Provence, and he didn’t drop a set in his first two matches.

Rublev reached the Australian Open quarterfinals before falling to Sinner.

Maxim Cressy is on the provisional qualifying list.

Korda’s father, Petr, reached the quarterfinals in Rotterdam in 1997, so the younger Korda has something to shoot for.

Korda reached the semifinals in Adelaide before running into Jiri Lehecka. He fell in straight sets to Rublev in the Round of 32 at the Australian Open.

A Trip Down Memory Lane

Dating back to when Arthur Ashe won three of the first four tournaments played in Rotterdam, there have been some big names who won this tournament.

Jimmy Connors and Stefan Edberg are two-time champions. More recently, Roger Federer joined Ashe as the only three-time champion of the tournament.

In the 2023 event, an unseeded Sinner upset No. 1 seed Stefanos Tsitsipas on his way to the final.

Rune and Alexander Zverev were seeded but fell in the quarterfinals as Sinner topped local product Tallon Griekspoor in the semifinals.

Medvedev lost his first set of the tournament to Alejandro Davidovich Fokina before winning his next eight sets. He topped Sinner in an entertaining three-set final.

What’s Up Next?

When looking at the tennis schedule, with tournaments in Delray Beach, Florida as well as Buenos Aires, Argentina, there are plenty of options for players right now.

The next ATP 1000 event isn’t coming up until March, when the Indian Wells, California event will attract most of the top players in the world. That is followed by another two-week ATP 1000 event in Miami.
