CONMEBOL Standings: 2026 World Cup Qualifiers

2026 Conmebol Qualifiers

Ahead of the 2026 World Cup, thanks to the increased number of teams, Conmebol standings now have six nations automatically securing a World Cup place with an additional team progressing into an intercontinental play-off; this is an increase from the previous four nations.

The CONMEBOL standings action gets underway in the September FIFA international window in 2023, with games concluding in September 2025. Brazil and current World Cup champions Argentina will meet for the first time in November 2023 and then head-to-head again in March 2025.

CONMEBOL Teams

Ten teams compete for the top CONMEBOL standings as they prepare for the 2026 World Cup. Since FIFA has made it so 48 teams qualify for the upcoming World Cup, only four teams from CONMEBOL will miss out on the illustrious tournament.

Messi and Argentina, the most recent World Cup champions, will hope to keep their momentum going and secure the top CONMEBOL standing. Here are all ten teams competing in CONMEBOL.

  • Argentina
  • Brazil
  • Uruguay

Top Teams to Qualify

Everyone expects Argentina, Brazil, and Uruguay to top the CONMEBOL standings after finishing the qualifiers in 2025. However, that will still leave three more spots to take.

Out of the seven remaining teams, the teams who will likely qualify for the 2026 World Cup are Colombia and Ecuador.

Colombia

Colombia barely missed the 2022 World Cup and has been kicking themselves since. Most of their golden generation, like James Rodriguez, Falcao, and Sanchez, are past it, and the new generation is making waves.

Colombia has a young team hungry to return to the top of the CONMEBOL standings. Their new manager, Nestor Lorenzo, can lead this team to the World Cup.

Ecuador

Ecuador also has a new coach with Felix Sanchez at the helm. He is bringing fresh tactics to this incredibly young squad and will look to get Ecuador back on the map.

After a disappointing 2022 World Cup campaign, Ecuador can make some waves in CONMEBOL qualifying. They could be a team to watch going forward and beyond the World Cup.
